Gunpowder the Gabite is the questionable leader of the Rogues. Sassy and powerful, he does much of the gruntwork needed to further his yet unknown goals, trusting the direction of his partner Devonshire. Being known as quite the liar, his background is as of yet a mystery, with the only certainty being that he was at some point a pirate on the open seas.

He is rather abrasive at the best of times, but as many guild members have discovered, he is especially so about certain topics. One such subject is his back "fin". Some have claimed that a male Gabite should have a chipped fin, but Gunpowder is quick to dismiss such claims, saying "I take good care of meself," and that these claims are without any basis to begin with, due to a lack of other Gabite for comparison. Another touchy subject for Gunpowder, although less so, is the topic of "evolution". Gunpowder has a sort of hatred towards Garchomp in general, and is disgusted by the idea of becoming one, although his reasons are unknown.

Background

Pre-Guild

Early History

Not much is known of Gunpowder at this time, and being a rather shady character, it is difficult to get a hold of him for comment. The most successful in doing so thus far was Kathy, who delved somewhat into his history, in particular how he met his partner Devonshire. However, in her interview with Devonshire, it was revealed that some or all of the information she received from Gunpowder was fabricated.

Tao Village

No one seems to remember Gunpowder arriving, but no one seems to remember him not being there, either. However, a number of sources say he has actually not been in Tao Village for long. Furthermore, sources claim to have seen him interacting with PK in private, and judging from how tolerant of her Gunpowder is at times, it is now rumored that he owes her a great deal. These sources are close to PK, and are well aware of her nature, knowing she is certainly not above blackmail ...

Gunpowder inhabits a cave off the coast, in which he stores his hoard. Instead of containing numerous shiny or expensive objects, it instead contains items which are priceless to Gunpowder, and as such, he enlists only his most trusted guild associates to guard it. Other known locations are the "Devonshire Law Firm," a legal counseling service owned by his partner; the Spinda Café, where he likes to unwind and enjoy a glass of Lum Rum and on very rare occasions tea; and lastly, the Rescuer's Treehouse, where he enjoys harassing the other Rescuers and in particular Chill.

Although his association with Devonshire is strictly business related, it was revealed in the Mission 4 epilogue that Gunpowder has associates from his past, namely a Swampert pirate by the name of Bluegill and a Chatot by the name of Kayne.

Missions and Events

Mission 1

While Devonshire was taking care of more important business, Gunpowder was left with the task of training the new recruits. He decided to assign them three tasks, of which they had to choose one; all three of them involved stealing from some greedy Pokémon and bringing the loot back to the guild. Gunpowder wished to test both their ability to pilfer and their willpower when it came to not taking the loot for themselves. Gunpowder was impressed by very few, but disappointed by even less, so it was a success. One team in particular had brought back a mysterious rock, and at first Gunpowder thought it worthless, but decided it was best to have Devonshire take a look at it.

Interview

Shortly after obtain the Dark Stone, Kathy interviews the Gabite. In the interview, Gunpowder told the bird of his childhood and how became acquainted with Devonshire, though Kathy would later hear a completely different tale from the Sableye. Gunpowder assured the bird and the audience that the Rogues Guild was not filled with "bad guys" but he was unable to recall much of the guild's inner workings.

Mission 2

Devonshire discovered his stamp had been stolen by the Slasher Gang, lead by Slasher, a former Rogue. How the stamp fell into his hands in the first place is a mystery, but the blame would surely be pinned on Gunpowder. Because of this and how important an item it was to their business, it became Gunpowder's responsibility to venture into Creeping Forest and retrieve it, roughing up the Slasher Gang as necessary.

More important to Gunpowder, however, was the assault on his stash. A Ditto apparently thought it would be funny to transform itself into a door and block access, but since Gunpowder had other business to attend to, he was forced to reach out to the group for help. One team did manage to clear out the Ditto, but at the expense of the walls around it.

Mission 2 Epilogue

After examining the rock given to Gunpowder further, Devonshire knew what had to be done: after dealing with Slasher, Gunpowder was to head into a cave not far from Castle Draclugia to seek someone as of yet unknown to him. Upon arriving, he discovered it was a legendary beast by the name of Degue, a guardian of Monochrome Tower. Degue warned the Gabite against pursuing the matter further, but naturally he ignored it and made haste with the news to Devonshire.

Mission 3

Upon arriving, the two partners exchanged information they had learned while out: Devonshire was to head to Monochrome Tower, while Gunpowder was to stay behind and attempt to hinder the Rescuers from achieving a similar goal. Apparently, Mike's relationship with his mother Syrup is shaky, at best. Gunpowder promptly invited her to Tao Village, promising to arrange a great ceremony in her honor with the assistance of his "best of the best" of the Rogues.

Meanwhile, wanted posters for Gunpowder had begun to pop up around the village, tracing back to Chill. Gunpowder had done nothing wrong recently, and the posters consisted only of his face and "wanted", but a number of Rescuer teams did not question it and constantly harassed Gunpowder. Fortunately, the ceremony went forward as planned despite their intervention.

Mission 3 Epilogue

Unfortunately for Gunpowder, even a gang of low-ranking scrubs together creates a couple of competent Pokémon, and they consequently succeeded in taking him down. He was left in front of the Rescuer's hut as a symbol of their triumph. Of course, upon Devonshire's return, he heard of Gunpowder's situation and rescued him - after all, he was still required for future plans.

Event 3

In the wake of the dragon that PK had brought upon the village, Gunpowder fell ill, as cold and ice are his largest weakness. He decided to combine his guild's efforts with that of PK's and Mike's, as they had both become sick as well, in order to have more medicine mass produced and sent to those who need it. Although the top priority was getting the medicine to himself over the other leaders.

Redactions

Gunpowder was quick to recover from his ailment, but he was in no way prepared to work, being quite late for a delivery to PK. This angered Shroomsworth, and in order to let off steam, Gunpowder wandered off to the fountain, where he met Sorbet. In the midst of their discussion, Sorbet approached Gunpowder and removed his eyepatch, revealing it to be unnecessary to begin with. Gunpowder left without retrieving his patch with an idea for redeeming himself: he would purchase all of the berries the Merchants currently had on sale in their booth and donate them to the guild members. Shroomsworth, however, was unwilling to accept buying one's way into an apology and further chided Gunpowder. As it turned out, Gunpowder was being legitimate, and actually uttered the words "I'm sorry", which Shroomsworth was forced to accept.

Mission 4

Sometime later, Gunpowder was confronted in his cave by an old associate of his by the name of Bluegill, who was met with great disdain. Treading further on thin ice, Bluegill kept referring to Gunpowder as "Finnegan", implying it was some sort of alter-ego from years gone by, and even going so far as to call him "lass". Needless to say, Gunpowder was not impressed, calling the Swampert a liar after having heard news of "his home port" and promptly threw him out of the cave.

Following this, Devonshire brought a new resident of Tao Village to Gunpowder's cave; a Zangoose by the name of Dmitri. Having no other place for him to stay, Devonshire mentioned that Dmitri would be sharing Gunpowder's cave, which caused an immediate objection from the Gabite, citing privacy concerns. However, Devonshire cared not, and said that he would prepare a new cave "at his own leisure", forcing Gunpowder to deal with the extremely inquisitive Dmitri.

Mission 5 Prologue

Despite being annoyed from Dmirtri's naivety and innocence, Gunpowder was quick to restrain Dmitri from going out to fight an enraged Sorbet all by himself. Unfortunately for Gunpowder, he was ordered by Devonshire to lead the teams to divert Sorbet's attention away from Tao Village and into Creeping Forest, alongside with Dmitri.

Mission 5

Gunpowder teamed up with Dmitri, Fresnel, and Maple to help distract Sorbet and lead him to Creeping Forest. When PK and Coliche arrive, they had already been fighting for some time and were going to head back to the village. But Dmitri convinces Gunpowder that they must stay and help, to which he begrudgingly agrees. However, they arrive too late and witness Coliche's close encounter with death. Gunpowder and Dmitri hide in the bushes nearby and watch as Prosphora heals her and seals Sorbet into his stone slumber once more. While they watch, Dmitri pesters Gunpowder with more questions, which agitates him.

Bitter Tears

Gunpowder was called upon by Merlot to go on a stroll with her. He was reluctant to go, being intimidated by the Lugia's size and her reputation, but followed the Lady to what appeared to be her room when she was just a child. From the room, the two jumped out the window into the courtyard and followed a hidden path to a cave. At the end of the cave was a ledge that looked over a part of the Creeping Forest. Gunpowder asked Merlot why didn't they just leave the castle to get there, or have her fly, but quickly commented his preference to caves and tunnels when he noticed the Lady getting tense.

While there, Merlot demanded the Gabite to tell her about his partner. Gunpowder talked about Devonshire and of their adventures together for hours until his voice couldn't take it any more. After a small break, Gunpowder asked her why she didn't come to Tao Village to look for him after all this time. The question struck a nerve with Merlot, causing her to admit her fear of leaving the castle and breaking down into tears.

Mission 6

Gunpowder was brought to Castle Draclugia with Dmitri by Udon, and was immediately confused by the fact Dmitri has been there before. Annoyed by the Zangoose, he sent him off to help Soba in the kitchens. He had a private conversation with Merlot, who gave him a letter that Devonshire had left with her, which included a feather that he now wears in his hat.

Well of Memories

Gunpowder began to recall his days at Alomomola City when he once worked for Anana. He was not very good at handling transactions or rude customers, but instead of getting upset, Anana tried to cheer up the Gabite and told him to keep track of the inventory instead. The Kecleon invited him to her home for dinner but was surprised to find her sister, PK. This was the first time Gunpowder would meet the future owner of Tao Village. Rattled by her sister's appearance and departure to the village, Gunpowder bid Anana good night. Later that night, Gunpowder heard strange noises in the shop and went to investigate. A Scraggy had broken in and was threatening not only to destroy some merchandise, but also harm Anana as well. The Gabite stepped in before the villain hurt the Kecleon but before he died, the Scraggy appeared to recognize Gunpowder from a gang. Frightened, Anana gave Gunpowder his pirate hat and sent him to Tao Village to start his life over.

On his way to Tao Village, Gunpowder met a Raticate named Otis. With blood still on his claws, Otis was a bit reluctant to greet the Gabite, but Gunpowder managed to convince him it was just from a hunt earlier. Gunpowder was able to get a ride to the village in Otis's carriage, and was told about Devonshire. Just as Otis said, Devonshire hired Gunpowder on the spot, no questions asked, and he became a leader of the Rogues Guild.

One day, Gunpowder entered his cavern when he sensed someone else in there. It was his brother, Dorsen, and the Garchomp immediately began to attack him. Gunpowder tried to fight back, but his brother was stronger. Before Dorsen was able to kill Gunpowder, a dark spike went through his chest and Gunpowder woke up from his nightmare. He concluded Devonshire must be responsible for his recollection of memories and confront him. Gunpowder was able to land a hit on the Sableye but Devonshire denied in ever entering Gunpowder's mind. Gunpowder became concerned since the Draconicello went missing after the destruction of the village and he himself was vulnerable to its power. Overwhelmed by his memories, Gunpowder went back to his room and cried. Dmitri would find the Gabite and held him in comfort.

Mission 7

After being turned away by Fresnel, Opal went to Gunpowder in search of assistance in tracking down Bane and getting back all the gems the Mightyena had stolen from her. Busy with other things, Gunpowder assigned the job to Dmitri, completely overlooking that fact that Dmitri could not stand to be near, much less work for, a Seviper.

Mission 8

The Gabite was visited by Anana, who asked to borrow members from the Rogues Guild in order to evict Shroomsworth from the Merchant Hut.

Gunpowder had also received a request from Chex to help him collect bones from a graveyard of the Cubone's fancy, something that coincided with a task Devonshire had sent for the Gabite to do. They embarked on their quest with Barty's assistance and landed in a burial grounds near the forest. Gunpowder located a cavern similar to one Devonshire request he explore and proceeded to investigate. To his dismay, the bandages of a Cofagrigus bound him and were eager to sacrifice his skin to a God he didn't know or care to know.

Tasks

Gunpowder sent out a notice to members of the Rogues guild to assist him completing tasks while Devonshire was gone. He asked for teams to help sort out the mail that was piling on the Sableye's desk. In addition, he also asked for a team to pick up a package from him and drop it off somewhere north of Tao Lake at a large tree. He also left a warning of the Patrat Patrol, who had been tipped off and were on the look out for any suspicious activity in the area.

Incidentally, Gunpowder was approached by guild members with a letter from the Patrat Patrol stating how there has been a lack of payment for their services from the Rogues guild.
